Profile: Eric Forte
Name: Eric Forte Age: 42 (2009) Nicknames: E Hometown: Austin Employment: Librarian Family: Sons Vaughn and Zane, their wonderful mother Christine, and the rest who waltz across Texas. Other sports, hobbies, interests, etc.: Racing the road bike, falling off the mountain bike, playing guitar. Most prized possession: OM symbol gift. Favorite Food: Cheese. Any type. I also have a bad Taco Bell habit. Favorite Movie: I'm a librarian, so let's stick with the stereotypes: favorite BOOK may be The Razor's Edge for the formative if dangerous effect it had on my early life. For pure entertainment and inventiveness: Perec's Life, a User's Manual. Perec was a librarian -- the success of this novel finally allowed him to quit his day job... but shortly after he died of lung cancer. Favorite Spectator Sport: I can watch just about anything live. But 'Ball' has baskets. Car Id Love to be Driving: bicycle. My friends describe me as: original; absurd; grumpy (just heard my older son ask my younger son if "Papa was in a grumpy mood today.") My trademark expression is: "yippee" (ala Dylan in 'Talking Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues') If money were not a consideration, I would love to: Spend all of my time parenting my children. In the next 5 years, I hope to: put my incredible good fortune to better use. In the next 10 years, I hope to: have children who have retained confidence in their kindness, decency, responsibility, and honesty even as they enter the more ambiguous and confusing world of adults. Personal accomplishments: can't think of any... but I AM ridiculously lucky. Personal fact that will surprise my friends: I spent some time living an ascetic life. Or something. Favorite Running Shoes: Red. Favorite Distance and PR (post collegiate): Any distance, any discipline. Best Race and Why: Hm. I loved Pier to Peak the first time I did it. Aaron wasn't there, among others, and it was a thrill to get to win. Worst Race and Why: Hm again, my last high school race. Until then I'd always visualized losing and fed off of that fear. For the last race I visualized winning... and I wasn't ready to run with that kind of confidence. Average Weekly Mileage (last 12 months): 35 Favorite Local Race: Pier to Peak; State Street Mile. Most Memorable Running Experience: I dunno... they're all pretty good. Favorite Place to Run: : San Ysidro / Cold Springs loop. Glory Days PR: Still waiting for the glory days. Realistic Running Goals for this Year: 2:40 marathon, sub 33/16 on legit 10K/5K course, sub 4:40 legit mile. Wildly Optimistic Running Goals for this year: do an ultra. Lifetime Running Goals: to be able to do a hike-up 14er at 70 years old. To be able to walk the world's streets with loved ones at 80. Local Running Heroes & Why: the middle-of-the-packers. Most know the fast people and everyone cheers the slow people but it's the middle children who make every race. Personal Training Tips: Run less. Run slower. Smell the sagebrush. (train light; race hard?) Why I Run: Because my ankles are trashed from basketball... and for the peace of the trails and the slow rhythm of the climb. I love runners who: Smile and show some teeth. I don't care for runners who:I dunno, deep down I even like the ones I don't care for. Suggestions for local races: : They are so good in Santa Barbara. Enjoy the competent organization and timing. Suggestions for SBAA: Keep it up. Favorite Quote: "Moose.............Indians".... (Thoreau's last words) SBAA Member since: 2007. By Joe Howell and Gene Deering
