Westmont Invitational Every year Westmont College has an invitational Cross-Country race at the end of September. They very kindly invite the SBAA to field men and women's teams. It's an 8K race for men and a 5K for women through the hilly Westmont campus (first year on a new course now that construction is over). John Loftus and Drea McLarty will be captaining the two teams (though Drea won't be able to run this year). They are looking for courageous runners (male and female) to join the cause (putting a beat down on the collegiate runners). Anyone interested in racing, should contact them ( John.Lofthus@ia.ucsb.edu, dreapink@Hotmail.com ). (30 Aug)

MCCONNELL'S ICE CREAM ENDURANCE EVENTS: New women masters 10K course record set:

As the runners toed the line for McConnell's 10K this morning, under ideal racing conditions, Melissa Marsted's masters women course record was very much in jeopardy, as the starting field included three women who were more than capable of topping Marsted's time of 39:32 set in 2006. It seemed to be simply a matter of which woman would win and what the final time would be. The result was one of the more competitive women's masters races in recent memory. In the end, Mary Jones was victorious, finishing in 38:52, edging out Cindy Crawford and Chrystee Bradley, with times of 38:55 and 39:08 respectively. All three broke the women masters record. Additionally, the trio were 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the age graded placings, with only Tim Strand achieving a higher age graded percentage(81.96%).

Strand was fifth overall, with Aaron Gillen running a spectacular 34:12 to easily win, followed by Michael Shalhoub in 34:41, Ricky Ho at 34:44 and Justin Torrellas in 34:55.

No records were to be had in the 5K, with Justin Torrellas winning by a huge margin in a final time of 17:07, well ahead of Matthew Preiss who ran 18:49 and Bill Daley in 18:51. Elizabeth North of Arroyo Grande won the women's race in 21:36 and had the best age graded time in the race. Second for the women went to Celeste Marx in 21:45, with Anne Thwing third in 22:09.

Kevin Young did his usual masterful job as Race Director, with the help of many volunteers. With free McConnell's ice cream for all, it was a true family event, with many young runners out there along with their parents enjoying a great Sunday morning at Goleta Beach.

RUNNING WITH FLAVOR

Kevin Young, Club West Run for Life & McConnell’s Ice Cream ‘dish it out’ for local kids

“You scream... I scream…we all scream for ice cream!!”

Remember that one as a kid?

Yeah, me too…

Sunday was the perfect day and Goleta Beach, the perfect place – (WHOA!! EVEN THE SUN EVEN CAME OUT EARLY!!) - for both screamin’ & chillin’ -- the 32nd Annual McConnell’s Ice Cream of Santa Barbara Endurance Events– a 5K Run or Walk, 10K Run & Biathlon; Kid’s Mile Beach Run and Mile Ocean Swim.

Unique race features included: free entry for those under age 19 and over age 65; awards to top three finishers in five-year increment age groups; custom ribbons to all participants and one incredibly low price ($20) to run or swim in all races.

Over 400 participated in this special fundraiser for local non-profit: Club West Run for Life, whose mission, according to its website (John- pls insert hotlink www.runforlife.org) “… is to introduce and encourage the healthy benefits of running for life for Santa Barbara County youth.”

And for Founding Race Director Kevin Young, who also serves as Club West Run for Life Board Member -- it’s been a labor of love every step of the way…

Young caught the running craze in the early 1970’s when he was, well, young. Running, very simply, changed his life forever. He’s been sharing … living its benefits … and ‘paying it forward’ ever since.

According to one very credible source….

“We used to live in LA and when Kevin was about age 12, he started running around the block with his dad,” according to Jeney McCoy, Kevin’s Mom and Matriarch of the McConnell’s Ice Cream Empire (John – pls hotlink McConnell’s Ice cream website here or above).

“We are very proud of Kevin. The whole family stands with him in helping kids, especially since our first race in 1978,” she added.

Indeed they do!

On-hand with Mom, was husband , Jim “Mr. McConnell’s” McCoy; Kevin’s three brothers – Mike, Andy and Jimmy and sister, Jeni, along with their families. And their dog.

Basically, everyone.

After 32 years, they certainly “have it down” – everyone chips in and Kevin moves effortlessly between venues … starting races… announcing winners…chatting with nearly everyone – with an always-smile.

Along the way, he offered his own perspective on his early running beginnings…

“I was the shortest kid in my JHS class. Was never picked for anything in sports. But I could beat the big kids in the 600 Yard Run. In 9th Grade, I ran a 5:23 mile with no training. So I went out for Cross Country in HS and ended up on a dominant team at University High School in West L.A. In my senior year, in 1974, we were LA City Champs. I’ve been running ever since.”

Thirty-plus years of running 5Ks and 10Ks have added up for Young so he’s launched a new passion: trail running. Last weekend, he finished a 50K trail race in the San Gabriel foothills, his second “ultra.” More long trail races are on his horizon.

And when he’s not making a living selling real estate and training, he’s very busy providing healthy and positive experiences for kids across SB County….

“It’s not only teaching the joys of running as a way of life, but encouraging healthy behaviors – such as protecting your eyes and skin, especially while running, the importance of proper diet habits and the importance of being a good community citizen,” Young said.

“We’ve built into the run for life kids program many fun incentives to keep track of their miles and record good deeds. All of today’s proceeds are donated to the Club West Run for Life, directly supporting local kids’ races and running programs,” he added.

The most amazing performance of the day occurred in the Womens’ Masters’ Division.

The 10K course record was set by Melissa Marsted in 2006 – the fastest time since 1985.

Three women broke that record in a terrific and competitive race. Santa Barbara’s Chrystee Bradley finished in Third Place (39:08), while Cindy Crawford finished second (38:55) and Mary Jones of Ventura finished first, setting a new course record (38:52).

Oh, in addition to the local stars, there was another familiar face in the crowd. In the race, actually…

In his first 10K race since he “started to do cardio in March,” Drew Carey, of TV fame, achieved his goal of finishing under an hour. He did at 58:26. Even with his new svelt shape, Drew celebrated success with a healthy bowl of ice cream. And the toppings.

Safe to say, it was a “total team effort” for a great community cause -- helping kids enjoy all the benefits that life has to offer “every scoop of the way” …

And so they can stay, like that old tune, Forever Young.

Yes, just like Kevin…

Profile: David Monico Seeing David Monico’s effortless stride makes it easy to see why UCSB cross country wanted him running for them. While most of us will never be able to run a 14:36 5K, at least David can admit that he cannot run a marathon with little training. (Note- David’s “Worst Race” and medical tent visit post race still resulted in a sub 3 hour Boston Marathon.) (19 Jul)

His daughter Mary Carman was a real good runner too. I knew Mary a bit but not Bob, just heard about him. She used to have an ice cream store in SB. The Brennands have 3 generations of great distance runners too.

Semana Nautica 15K I always worry that this race will be too hot. I'm not partial to running when it's hot and this race tends to bring out that worry. Fortunately today was overcast and cool(ish).
Chris Braden of Goleta won with a time of 50:36, closely followed by Shaun Haley (41) in 50:38. Third place was Sergey Sushchikh. The women's race was won by Chrystee Bradley in 59:21, followed by Meredith Coulibaly and Rosalva Bonilla.
Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped out and made the race a good, safe, enjoyable experience for everyone.
