38th Annual Club West Masters & Open Track & Field Track Meet

Moorpark meetSBAA’s own Elizabeth Schwyzer began training with SBRR in 2012 and gained the confidence through her workouts and the support of her fellow runners to attempt throwing it down with the big girls at the Club West all comers meet this past weekend in Moorpark. She ran Cross country in high school, but had not thought about hitting the track until recently.  She took up the challenge of running those shorter distances on a hunch that she might enjoy the all-out effort.

In her first ever track meet she killed the competition in her age group. I’m thinking ringer, but according to Elizabeth “Since I didn’t train specifically for these distances, don’t own track spikes, and don’t even know how to use a starting block, I was a complete novice, but I really had a blast.”  I guess it goes to show that you don’t know what you got until you try. Her times posted below.

  • 800m in 2:40:57, 1st woman 30-34
  • 400m in 1:09:46, 2nd woman 30-34
  • 100m in 15:47, 2nd woman 30-34

Our running ace and age group champion had the honor of not only meeting but being cheered by Lesley Chaplin the current US record holder for the 800m and mile in the 55 plus age group.  “She turned out to be super-friendly, cheered me on in every heat, and even ran a cool-down with me!”.  I just goes to show that runners are good people and support each other no matter where they are from.

with Lesley ChaplinShe had a great time “I would LOVE to get more folks involved. Apparently, the next masters track meet is in Santa Ana in February…”.  If you want to test your skills Carpenteria hosts a series of all comers meets starting in March.  To see those and other track events in the area go to http://www.trackinfo.org/.

When you see her on the track, road or trails, give her a high five and a hearty congratulations.  Elizabeth, keep us posted on your next turn around the oval.
