Message from Your President

Dear SB Running Community,
On behalf of the Santa Barbara Athletic Association Board, I am thrilled to share our new mission statement (see below).  For the first time in my 5+ years on the board, I feel that we have a strong sense of the type of organization that we want to become.  This step would not have been possible if it were not for the hard work of past SBAA Boards.  I am especially thankful for the leadership provided by Jim Sloan and Tamara Berndt.  Both Jim and Tamara set a high standard that I hope we can live up to.

SBAA MISSION STATEMENT
The Santa Barbara Athletic Association provides community leadership and support for all types of running, including track, trail, ultra, road and cross-country.  We encourage people of all ages and abilities to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle through running and we work collaboratively with the community to bring attention and respect to Santa Barbara as a great running community.

This past month we welcomed four new board members to the Board of Directors.  They have had an immediate impact on our organization and provide a fresh set of ideas.  The newest class of Board members include David Walker, Michael Desmond, Wendy Kosche and Bentley Nunes. They join a solid group of returners that include Patty Bryant, Gary Clancy, Mike Swan and myself.

As we move into 2018 (my second and final year as President), I hope to achieve the following items:
1. Continue to recruit great volunteers for our Board of Directors
2. Broaden the SBAA’s mission to provide support for the following four areas: Youth Running (pre-HS, HS,   and Collegiate), Community, Elite and Masters
3. Work with like-minded organizations in the Santa Barbara to build stronger collaborations
4. Begin the groundwork to hire an Executive Director for the SBAA in the future

We cannot achieve this without you!  While we have a strong Board of Directors, there are only 9 of us on the board.  I encourage you to consider joining one of our committees.  I have included more information below along with the link to sign up.  These committees are not only fun but they will help shape our path forward.  If you care about this running community, I urge you to step up as a volunteer.

Another way that you can support our mission is to become a member of the Santa Barbara Athletic Association.  Members provide critical funds that allow us to make the investment into our running community.  Need more reasons to join?  Members receive a very cool SBAA BOCO technical trucker hat, enjoy a 10% discount at the Santa Barbara Running Company and are able to register for the Grand Prix. I look forward to continuing my service to you and the Santa Barbara running community.

Sincerely,

John Lofthus
SBAA Board President
