Tamara Berndt

Tamara_Berndt[1]Tamara Berndt is everywhere…..name sound familiar? If you ran the inaugural SB International Marathon last December, you will recall Tamara’s photo/story from the official program- she was the foldout (ok, almost) with the article titled “She’s a Loser, and Proud of It”. She also was the SBIM website developer, in her spare time…(what spare time?)
Those who are part of SB Running & Racing (the Rusty Snow/Mike Swan Sat running group) know Tamara well…..if you read the recent Profiles of SBRR members, you will note that several named Tamara as one of their running heroes….the St. George Marathon (Oct 2nd) will be her 7th marathon …in 2010, she also managed to squeeze in the LA Marathon, two Half Ironman races and her first full Ironman (Coeur d’Alene) race.
More important than her running accomplishments are the energy, support and fun Tamara brings to our running community…five minutes with her (or just hearing her signature laugh) and you will join her fan club.

Name: Tamara Berndt
Age: 40 (2010)
Nicknames: Moo, Giggles
Hometown: Chicago, IL
Employment: Yardi Systems
Family:
Youngest of 3 girls, Parents & oldest sister w/ niece & nephew in Chicago and middle sister with niece & nephew in Seattle.
Other sports, hobbies, interests, etc.: Is there anything other than running? 😉
I’ve been into the triathlon thing for the last 2 years. I just completed my first Ironman in June 2010.

Most Prized Possession: During the Gap fire I thought it best to leave my house and pack up and you know what I grabbed? My race medals….
Favorite Food: I’m a foodie and love all kinds of things. I have a special addiction to lattes. I try to stay away from dark chocolate, marzipan and ice cream but I can’t help myself! Favorite meal out would be a good sushi restaurant.

Favorite Spectator Sport: Football — GO BEARS!
My friends describe me as: I emailed two friends and they said “dynamic, funny, loyal inspiring friend, dedicated, motivated, strong, supportive”. They are so nice and I must have them pretty fooled!
My trademark expression is: My giggle
If money were not a consideration, I would love to:
Train & cook all the time
In the next 5 years, I hope to: I hope to have run a 50 miler, qualify for Boston, do another Ironman
In the next 10 years, I hope to: still be running and having fun!
Personal accomplishments: I lost 75 lbs 4 years ago, and I’m the healthiest and most fit I’ve ever been. I’m running my 7th marathon at St. George in Oct 2010, I completed my first Ironman this year, and a bunch of other things I never thought in a million years I would be doing.
Personal fact that will surprise my friends: I wear my heart on my sleeve, and I have a big mouth, so I don’t think there is anything people don’t already know.

Favorite Running Shoes: Asics Nimbus. I’m looking for a new lighter shoe…
Favorite Distance and PR (post collegiate): Marathon 3:53 CIM 2008
Best Race and Why:
Carlsbad 5000-My goal was to break 24 minutes. I went down to Carlsbad with Maggie Mason & Drea McLarty. I was so excited to be with the fast people! I ran the race in 23:56 and beat my goal. At the end, I lost “control” and ran to Drea to tell her. She was so proud!
Worst Race and Why: San Diego Rock ’N Roll Marathon 2007. Kristin Aller, Brooke Powell, Gary Clancy and I all went down to San Diego together. We had been training with Mike Swan & Rusty Snow for a bit, and we were so overconfident. Kristin was the only one who had a good race (she qualified for Boston!).
Average Weekly Mileage (last 12 months): 40
Favorite Local Race:
Santa Barbara International Marathon (yes, shameless promotion!)
Most Memorable Running Experience: Running CIM. We had 10 people from SBRR there, and I think almost everyone had a PR!
Favorite Place to Run: In Santa Barbara, I like to run along the beach and Mountain Drive. I travel quite a bit for work and love exploring new trails in new places. Helps keep me sane.
Glory Days PR: I’m newer to running and hoping that my PRs are still ahead of me

Realistic Running Goals for this Year: 3:50 at St. George
Wildly Optimistic Running Goals for this year: 3:45 at St. George
Lifetime Running Goals:
3:35 marathon, sub 22 for a 5K; is that crazy?
Local Running Heroes & Why: Mike Obi Wan Swan & Rusty Snow. They are both amazing masters at their craft. Elda & Danny Rudd, Marie Schnyer, Brooke Powell, Gary Clancy, Tony Borek are so dedicated to the sport and to the continuing improvements one can make in themselves. They inspire me every day. Drea McLarty, Mike Shalhoub, Jamie Haggar, Ricky Ho show how to be fast with class!
Personal Training Tips: Consistency and perseverance.
Why I Run: It makes me happy and feel like anything I want to do is possible.

I love runners who: Encourage other runners. I don’t think I would still be running without the encouragement I received in the early days from Kristin Aller, Brooke Powell, Kent Harris and Stuart Sato. Kent and Stuart would come back to get me on the tempo runs or at track and finish my workout with me. You have no idea how much that meant to me!
I don’t care for runners who: Are arrogant

Add Anything: My niece asked me “why do you have to run so much?”… I told her if you could have a play date before school, wouldn’t you?
Favorite Quote: “Key to happiness is low expectations.” Then you are always pleasantly surprised.
